TRAVEL – 5 Wintertime Luxury Ruralist Getaways.

In the late 19th century, many of America’s richest and most illustrious families built magnificent getaway homes in the northeast to connect with nature in the summer and winter. They built their “cottages” with all of the rustic splendor that their newfound wealth would allow.

Some of these luxury compounds, in the most beautiful rural areas of the northeast, are now hotels, many with their original furnishings. The ones that I have featured here are members of RELAIS CHATEAUX group, noted for fine cuisine, hospitality and incredible service. Enjoy your visual vacation! -VLR

LAKE PLACID LODGE – Lake Placid NY.

In 1882, a German family built a rustic camp of shingle and stone on the shores of Lake Placid New York. The original camp remained a private residence until 1946 when it was sold and converted into a luxury hotel. Sadly, in 2005. a massive fire burned the original camp to the ground. Fortunately, the owners hired local carpenters, architects and artisans to rebuild the camp to its original glory but with modern amenities. The result is the best of both worlds! Cabins start at $359.00 per night.

The resort as it exists today was opened in 1981 after a complete restoration (Including winterizing). The result is magnificent (and the restaurant is notable for its farm to table offerings including a chocolate menu!) Rooms start at $435.00 per night.
