In the late 19th century, many of America’s richest and most illustrious families built magnificent getaway homes in the northeast to connect with nature in the summer and winter. They built their “cottages” with all of the rustic splendor that their newfound wealth would allow.
Some of these luxury compounds, in the most beautiful rural areas of the northeast, are now hotels, many with their original furnishings. The ones that I have featured here are members of RELAIS CHATEAUX group, noted for fine cuisine, hospitality and incredible service. Enjoy your visual vacation! -VLR
LAKE PLACID LODGE – Lake Placid NY.
In 1882, a German family built a rustic camp of shingle and stone on the shores of Lake Placid New York. The original camp remained a private residence until 1946 when it was sold and converted into a luxury hotel. Sadly, in 2005. a massive fire burned the original camp to the ground. Fortunately, the owners hired local carpenters, architects and artisans to rebuild the camp to its original glory but with modern amenities. The result is the best of both worlds! Cabins start at $359.00 per night.
BLANTYRE – Lenox Massachusetts.
Built in 1902 by the Patterson family, Blantyre was a country home based on Mr. Patterson’s mother’s home in Blantyre Scotland. The resort as it exists today was opened in 1981 after a complete restoration (Including winterizing). The result is magnificent (and the restaurant is notable for its farm to table offerings including a chocolate menu!) Rooms start at $435.00 per night.
THE LODGE AT GLENDORN – Bradford Pennsylvania.
A beautifully rustic lodge built in the 1920’s has been converted into a splendid luxury rural retreat. Rooms start at $475.00
THE POINT – Saranac Lake New York.
The Point was built as a woodland retreat by the Rockefellers in the late 19th century. Though rustic in design, it had every modern amenity possible back in its day. Today, it is unique in the world and a place to relax (in total rural luxury) or to enjoy gourmet picnic excursions, as the competent staff will organize each day for you according to your own wishes. Rooms start at $1750.00 a night.
